Create a song in any key!

This editor will let you create a song from a set of progressions. Fill in the fields for up to six song sections and you will get a printable lead sheet filled in with the chords for the keys you requested. You can go back and forth between the song page and this editor page without losing the information you entered into the song fields. So you can change the key of any song part or change the clef of your ledger lines without having to re-type your progressions.

Each song section can contain as many measures as you like. A new staff will be created after 16 beats (4 measures).

Name Your Song & Select A Clef

It's a good idea to put a title on your songs so that when you print them they are easily identified. Then select bass or treble clef. You will get a full-width staff of ledger lines with the clef you selected. After printing your song you can write in a melody line or a bass line.

In the fields for each section of the song,
  • type a caption such as A B or Chorus or Bridge etc.
  • select a Key from the list of 12 keys
  • type in a chord progression for that section of the song
  • use a - for a beat without a chord symbol
  • use a blank between chords and beats

In the progression field, use standard Roman numeral format. So major chords will be I II III IV V VI VII. Minor chords will be i ii iii iv v vi vii. If you want a seventh, just append a 7. If you want a diminished, just append a dim. If you want no chord just type n.c. or anything you like as long as it has no blanks because blanks separate beats.

Click the "View The Song" button and the song will displayed 16 beats to a staff on a new page so you can view it or print it without seeing all the stuff on this page. Just click the "Progression Song Editor" button and you will come back here so you can make changes or create another song.

Use a Text Editor to Save Your Songs

It saves me time if I work with a text editor and copy and paste my progressions into this form. That lets me save, retrieve, edit and reprint my songs. For example, All My Loving.txt looks like this:

All My Loving
Verse 1 (C)
ii - - - V7 - - - I - - - vi - - - IV - - - ii - - - VIIb - - - - - - n.c. - ii - - - V7 - - - I - - -vi - - - IV - - - V7 - - - I - - - - - - n.c.
Verse 2 (Bb)
ii - - - V7 - - - I - - - vi - - - IV - - - ii - - - VIIb - - - - - - n.c. - ii - - - V7 - - - I - - -vi - - - IV - - - V7 - - - I - - - - - - n.c.
